Can Black women grow their hair?

Writer: Karmen MoxieKarmen Moxie

Happpppy Self-Care Sunday, Famzis! My weekend is coming to an end with my favorite time of the week—Self-Care. All about Me, Myself, and I. And in honor of Black History Month, I am discussing my hair.

Many people still believe that Black women aren't capable of growing their hair because they wear wigs often. As you can see from the video, that is absolutely incorrect. As a matter of fact, I WISH my hair didn't grow as much. I have 4c curls. My hair is THICK, THICK, THICK! It's also long, but my shrinkage causes my hair to be a third of its length when it's wet.

If I want spiral curls or a smooth hairstyle, the process takes me no less than two hours. Plus, heat can really damage my hair. A wig, however, is quick and easy to install. Also, it doesn't damage the cuticles. So I prefer wigs. But the biggest reason I wear wigs is because I want to do it. Today I will be deep conditioning my hair, which means at least five hours of battle with my lovely coif. Sheesh!!!
